VALTER DESPALJ

Artistic director
Valter Despalj, born in Zadar, Croatia; graduated from the Juilliard School (cello with L. Rose, chamber music with F. Galimir and Juilliard Quartet); took master classes with P. Casals, P. Fournier and A. Navarra; two years of graduate study with G. Kozolupova at the Moscow Conservatory; intensive soloist activity with concerts all over the world (Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall in London, Sydney Opera House, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Moscow Conservatory Hall etc.); soloist with orchestras including Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Dutch Radio Orchestra, Washington National Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony and others, under baton of such eminent conductors as R. Benzi, S. Comissiona, J. Conlon, V. Handley, G. Herbig, H. Iwaki, L. Matacic, A. Markowski, H. Mitchell and D. Zinman; played chamber music amongst others with G. Kremer, Yo-Yo Ma, H. Schiff, Ph. Entremont, Y. Bashmet, T. Zimmerman, I. Grafenauer, D. Sitkovetsky and A. Rabinovich; professor at the Zagreb Academy of Music, editor of cello music with major music publishers, and a member of judging panels at the most prestigious international competitions.
MAJA DESPALJ-BEGOVIC
Violina
Maja Despalj-Begovic, born in Zadar, Croatia; studied violin with her father, then with I. Pinkava at the Zagreb Academy of Music; after graduating with honours (Vaclav Huml Prize) went to study at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore with Berl Senofsky; solo performances with Zagreb Philharmonic, Zagreb Symphony Orchestra and the Zagreb Soloists; took part at eminent festivals in Croatia and abroad and toured USA, Russia, Spain, Austria and Bulgaria; she has made CD's for Croatia Records label and recordings for radio stations; since 1987 professor of violin at the Zagreb Academy of Music; member of the juries at international competitions; co-founder of Despalj School of Music and STRINGS ONLY! Festival; she was awarded prestigious Croatian prizes Josip Stolcer Slavenski and Milka Trnina.
CHRISTIAN EULER
Viola
Christian Euler, born in Kassel, obtained his masters degree at the Juilliard School in New York. Among his teachers were Margaret Pardee, Walter Trampler and Emanuel Vardi. After a year with the New York Philharmonic, he was appointed associate principal violist with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Riccardo Muti, from year 1984-1991. Besides solo appearances in Germany, Italy, Canada and the USA he has been an active chamber music player with partners such as Franco Gulli, Bruno Giuranna, Natalia Gutman, Radu Lupu and Ulf Hoelscher, and was also a member of the Philadelphia Chamber Ensemble. Since 1991 has been professor of viola and chamber music at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts, and has conducted master classes in Germany, Spain and Canada.
REINHARD LATZKO
Cello

Reinhard Latzko, born in 1963 in Freising, Bavaria. Cello studies with Jan Polasek (Munich), Martin Ostertag (Karlsruhe), Heinrich Schiff (Basel). 1986 Swiss Prize at the Geneva Internatonal Competition. Since 1987 principal cello at the SWR-Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Gielen. Since 1988 teaching at the Academy of Music in Basel, Switzerland, and since 2002 professor of cello at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. Masterclasses in Germany, France and Switzerland. Chamber music with Ulf Hölscher, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Tetzlaff, Gustav Rivinius and others. Performances as soloist with the Zürich Tonhalle-Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, German Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, SWR-Symphony Orchestra. First performances of works by Rihm, Krenek, Gielen, Globokar etc.
